Corthar McCosain was born (in 1070) the fourth of six children to Grainne and Ronan McCosain. The family have been heriditary smiths going back as far as can be remembered. Aside from the Lawkeepers, they would have the longest traceable history of the Armengarians, in the form of weapons and armour forged by each generation.

Corthar grew like most children of his time to fight and hate the Calebii. He worked in the forge with his family as they had done previously. Unlike most of his siblings, Corthar sought more work in the forge, and grew to know and love metal as if it were a living thing itself. While his skill was still in his infancy, he showed promise, and at the request of his family, was granted reduced combat training so as to improve his skill, and to inherit the forge.

Over the course of the years, his siblings died in various conflicts with the Calebii. A sister died in childbirth. A brother by his own hand. All in all, a normal Armengarian life.

Corthar married late in life, at 16, but didn't sire a child until 18. Elaine (his wife) claimed that he spent most of his time in the forge, and was good for nothing the few times he managed to find his way home. Understandably, the laws regarding childbirth and marraige were relaxed somewhat given his position in the citadel.

By 26, Corthar had earned the ear of the recently-arrived Farseekers as a man who knew his weapons, and already held a position of respect of the people.

His child, Cormac was slain at the tender age of 12 in a routine scouting patrol that went bad. Elaine died of grief shortly after. Corthar simply had no reason to spend time at home, and now divided all his time between the forge, and the ever-increasing council sessions.

As a man who knows that the tempering of steel cannot be rushed, he always chooses caution over action, but is not averse to engaging the enemy once a course of action has been decided. A practised swordsman, he has not seen the same level of battle as men half his age, but he trains regularly and at every opportunity as he knows the day will arise when he must fight. Corthar is old by Armengarian standards at 32 (1102 HC), but he feels he has many years at the forge left, bar being cut down by Calebii.
