The Tower and the Flame
The Tower:
This is the cover word for any that worship Delalaria. Any one may pray to Delalaria or visit the outer sanctum of her temple, which has been established in an abandoned building in one of the disused areas of Armengar. However not all who pray to her are part of the Tower. Those who wish to be undergo a token ritual to show their complete devotion to her (those who do not undergo this ritual are known as the Flock Beyond the Walls or Flock for short). The ritual is non magical and purely symbolic and varies according to each caste. For the unburnt ones it could be a group meditation or the opportunity to give a sermon at a High Holy Day. For the burning ones it could be the presentation of a special potion or a symbolic mage battle. For the swords of fire it could a street brawl or a ritual battle with the Blade in which he submits after one blow.
Members of the Tower and the Flock are awarded the same amount of respect dependent on their achievement. Those who stand out are allowed more respect (i.e. P.C.s)
The Unburnt Ones: These are the priests and incantors of Delalaria. They are expected to spread the faith and keep Armengar free from corrupting influences. They tend to the temple and are responsible for uncovering scrolls and artefacts related to Delalaria. They are generally very devout and zealous, spending their entire lives in service and devotion to Delalaria. Anyone displaying priest talent and who is a follower of Delalaria (a stone in the Tower) is expected to become one of the unburnt, and this is considered a cause for great celebration. The unburnt ones are the final word on all matters of sanction within the Tower. All unburnt ones have at least some incantation ability.
The Burning Ones: These are the mages, spies, and intelligence agents of the church. They seek to protect Armengar through the use of their sorcerous power. These tend to be the inquisitors who root out threats to the citadel and to the people of Armengar. The burning ones are in charge of training the young ones in sword and war craft, and also must try to ascertain those who have either priest or mage talent. Of all the three castes, the burning ones are most vociferous of their desire to see the training camps devolved into three separate schools, one each for mages, incantors and warriors. They also believe that the training should start at a slightly later age with more emphasis on general physical development during their early years (i.e. balance, co-ordination, etc.) While nearly all burning ones have some spellcasting ability there are one or two exceptions to this rule.
The Swords of Fire: These are the templars of the Tower and consist of pretty much everyone else. As such there are more of them than any of the other castes (the ratio is roughly 1:3:6 respectively). They are charged with the protection of the young and the weak and to protect Armengar from all threats. They protect the temple and guard the flame from enemies and interlopers. They are also expected to teach the young ones armour craft. They tend to be affected by the madness of Delalaria in a more obvious way than either the unburnt ones or the burning ones though is not an absolute.
The Flame:
This is the council of three that heads the Tower. They are to be elected by their caste at the approval of the other castes. They each have an honourific that identifies them, The Unburnt, The Burning One, and The Blade of Flame. They are also called the Judge, the Keeper and the Executioner those these are normally used in a derogatory manner. Their jobs are to oversee their individual castes and make sure that everything is running smoothly. They represent the Tower on matters of faith and act as spokes men for their castes. Though there is no difference in the power afforded to each the Unburnt is generally counted as having more say in all matters and is the final word on matters of religious import.
Teachings
Loyalty:All members of the Tower are expected to be loyal to their brothers. It is an excommunicable offence to betray a fellow member. They are taught that unity is one of Delalaria's most treasured desires for her children for it is together we stand but divided we fall.
Incantation and Spellcasting:These are viewed as being divine gifts (incantation more so than spellcasting) and it is considered a great crime to waste either of these talents. Delalarians, especially the burning ones, actively seek children in both the Flock and the Tower who display signs of magical ability and if they are found they are immediately asked to begin their training for the good of Armengar.
Individuality and Community:Individuality is one of the most respected traits for any follower of Delalaria. While great reverence is given to those with knowledge it is both encouraged and expected for followers to question and come to an understanding of their own. The Flame holds that if you tell a man to do something and he does it, then he has learned nothing, but if you tell a man to do something, and he asks why then he will gain understanding. This is not to say that every man question every order. While it is hoped that all Delalarians can think for themselves they are also expected to obey the orders of their superiors, both secular and ecclesiastical.
Heramacles:The Tower has no official position on Heramacles save that he is another ancestor. They do not recognise him as being superior to Delalaria but nor do they extol that she is superior. The Tower believes itself to be on favourable terms with the church of Heramacles but whether that feeling is reciprocated or not is another matter. They see Heramacles as being the natural opposite to Delalaria the father figure who builds a home and defends his children from outsiders.
Truth:Delalaria is the blaze who shall burn away all falsehood and so members of the Tower and the Flock are encouraged never to lie without a good purpose and never to rely on their mistruths. It is taught that all lies are temporal and will eventually be discovered and so to depend on their efficacy is foolish. However this is not to say that Delalarians cannot lie. They do so when needs be, but it is not encouraged. Lying to one of the Flame is the only other excommunicable offence within the Tower, and lying to a member of wither the Flock or the Tower is guaranteed to get you shunned and distrusted.
Power: Delalaria was truly puissant and it was her strength of mind and character that saved Armengar on several occasions and so her followers respect that kind of power. This does not mean that they are all megalomaniacs or that they all desire power, just that they think power is something that not every one can achieve and those who do are to be respected. However the insanity does come to some as a thirst for power.
Knowledge: Knowledge is viewed as both a form of power and a path to enlightenment. The Flame encourages all followers to learn and explore whenever and whatever they can and so to increase their knowledge. This is seen most recently as a massive movement in the Tower to exploring the disused areas of Armengar for scrolls that have any information on Delalaria or the strange blinking creatures.
Definition:The Tower and the Flame both hold that being really good at one thing is far better than being sorta good at a whole load and so it is greatly encouraged that all followers capitalise on their main talent whatever that may be. Some swords are bards with almost no combat skills, while some burning ones are spies knowledgable about poisons and secrecy. However they are nearly always very specialised.
